We have been active participants and a significant portion of the School’s commitment to the outreach programs from the beginning,” says Dr. Dennis Fasbinder, director of the School of Dentistry’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry program.

The one–year AEGD program is designed to provide residents with a broad experience in general dentistry and to develop competence in various disciplines that are a part of a general dental practice.

“The rotations allow our residents to gain valuable experience in clinical environments that challenge them to be productive, given the number of patients they see at the clinics,” he adds. “Residents also gain valuable experience working with other members of the dental team.”

Residents spend 10 weeks on rotation, either at Mott Children’s Health Center in Flint, or at the Bayside Health Center in Bay City. Each rotation at the sites lasts two weeks.

During his rotation at the Bayside Health Center in Bay City, Dr. Justin Garner said Michigan’s AEGD program was strongly recommended to him by several faculty members at the University of Missouri–Kansas City dental school, where he earned his dental degree.

“The AEGD program is a catalyst for a young dentist to reach the skill level that’s needed to be able to perform dentistry at a veteran’s level,” he says. “Michigan’s AEGD program gives you a more well–rounded view on how to treat a patient under different circumstances.” When his one–year residency ends this summer, Garner plans to work in a public health clinic in the St. Louis area.
